Who Are You?

Middle School years were crazy! As a teenage boy, I wonder what was going on in my head? I wasn’t known as Dennis, but I was called Linda! That was my mama’s name. In those days, we thought it was so cool to find out everybody’s mama’s names and call them that throughout the entire day at school! Yes, we even made jokes about each other’s mama’s. Weird, I know!

Who are you? What have you been called? What label have people tried to put on you? Matthew 16:13-16 says this, “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. “But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

God wants us to understand who He is, where we can fully understand who we are! How many times do we blur our identity with our position, talent, failures, feelings, or other people’s words? We are giving people way to much power over our lives by listening to their thoughts and words about us.

Who does God say I am? Because His opinion is the one that counts! I want to give you 3 things to hold on to about your true identity.

First, God tells us you are a child of God! 1 John 3:1 says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world doesn’t know us is that it didn’t know him.” We are a child of the King!

Secondly, We are a chosen people. Colossians 3:12-13 says this, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved; cloth yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Stop trying to blend in and enjoy being different!

Thirdly, We have received the Spirit of sonship. Romans 8:15 read like this, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of sonship!” Thank you Lord!

What ever you been called, or whatever label people try to stick on you. You have to know that you are a child of God, you are a chosen people, and you have received Spirit of sonship! Your identity in found in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Get free from the chains of fear, self doubt, and past failures! You are loved and adored by the King of kings and the Lord of lords! Take time this morning to thank Him for being a part of His Family! God you are so good!
