Rest In Peace Bill Durham

Bill Durham is now in perfect peace with the Father! He passed away last night around 9:45 pm. I can here him singing in full voice and celebrating with Mema, Danny, Debbie, Mr. Youngblood, and Jim Lot! What a reunion! Praise God! He is praising the Lord and the angels in heaven are saying, “Man, this new guy can really sing!” No more pain, no more sorrow, and no more suffering. Yes, he is walking the streets of gold in full stride! If you know Bill Durham, you know what I am talking about. Mema had to jog just to stay 10 feet behind him.

What can you say about a man who meant so much to so many people? Yes, he was know for his golden voice but, he also had a golden heart! He cared for people, and he loved getting together and laughing, joking, and carry on with his buddies. He lit of the room with joy and passion. He has changed my life forever. I will never forget the day I asked him for Laura’s hand in marriage. I was a nervous wreck! I sat there for nearly 30 minutes trying to get up the nerve to ask him. When I finally did, he asked me, “Do you love her?” I looked him back in the eyes and said, “More than anything.” Then he said to me, “Take care of my baby girl, I give you my blessing.” I will never forget his voice, his face, and his passion for life.

What this man meant to me can not be held in this blog. But I wanted to honor him and his life this morning. He was a giant in his faith, a loving husband, loving dad, and a friend to everybody he met. He never knew a stranger. It’s so hard to let a loved one go, but I can see his smile, I can sense his joy, and I know he is in the arms of Jesus. I can hear the Lord saying to him, “Bill Durham, well done! Welcome home!” Because of that, I will rejoice and give thanks for the opportunity to be Bill Durham son-in-law. What an honor.

Pa, no more need to sing Sweet Beulah Land! You are home. Enjoy your big breakfast this morning! We will miss you, but we will see you again some day. By the way, thanks for the great example you gave me on how to live life to the fullest! Give Mema a kiss for me. Love you.

What Do We take for Granted?

I don’t know about you but I had one of those Monday’s yesterday! Everything I touched fell apart but today is a new day and I am looking forward to what God has for me.

I woke up this morning thinking about all the different things that I take for granted! How many times do we complain about our jobs but where would we be without it? My mind keep racing and I couldn’t change my thought pattern and God keep pressing on me! So I asked Him, “What else do I take for granted Lord?” Not sure if I should have done that.

Man, He opened the flood gates and He told me one thing after another! How many of us take our relationships for granted? Our family has lost two people in the past year that was very dear to us. We are not guaranteed tomorrow, so make sure you give that hug, say I love you, or go out of your way to say thanks!

The Lord showed me so many things this morning that is hard to get in a short blog! He showed me other things that I take for granted and the list goes like this: good health, running water, air conditioning, truck that runs and gets me from point A to point B. I have food in the refrigerator and I have coffee in hand! But what hit me hard was what He told me at the end of this never ending list! He said Dennis, “You have me and I am enough.”

I am a blessed man and I know there are some things I take for granted! Help me to have a thankful heart. Thank you Lord for showing me all the blessings you have poured out on me. But I just want to stop, and say thank you for your grace and your mercy! Thank you for the gift of eternal life and always being there for me. Help me to never take You for granted! I worship and praise You forever and ever!

I want to close with a few familiar verse this morning. John 3:16-18 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned.” What a blessing to be a child of God! We praise you this morning for the gift of salvation.
